Major publishing houses report a sustained surge in demand for English translations of Indian-language fiction, editors said, a trend they trace to a translated regional-language novel's international recognition several years ago.
Several publishers have launched dedicated translation imprints in the past two years, commissioning new English editions of both contemporary and classic regional-language works.
Translators said the increased attention has also improved pay and recognition for a profession long treated as secondary to original authorship.
