Odisha's disaster management authority has equipped 200 coastal cyclone shelters with satellite-linked early warning systems ahead of this year's cyclone season, officials said Wednesday.
The upgrade allows shelters to receive real-time alerts directly from the India Meteorological Department, bypassing local communication networks that have failed during past storms.
The state, which has significantly reduced cyclone casualties over the past decade through early evacuation protocols, said the new systems would be tested during a coastal drill later this month.
