LUCKNOW, October 30 (Aalimi Nation) – Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Lucknow on Friday to address the Bharatiya Janata Party's Uttar Pradesh state working committee, as the party began preparations for the 2027 Assembly election with the stated aim of winning a third consecutive term in the state.

The two-day meeting, on October 30 and 31, is expected to draw about 2,850 party functionaries. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, both Deputy Chief Ministers and senior state leaders were also expected to attend.

Agenda: roadmap and booth-level work

According to party leaders, the meeting will review organisational activity, draw up an election roadmap and strengthen coordination between state and district units. Strengthening the party's presence at the booth level and mobilising workers on the ground are among the priorities listed for the gathering.

BJP general secretary Arun Singh told reporters in Lucknow that the party was confident of returning to power with an absolute majority and forming the government for a third time in a row. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and the state government led by Mr Adityanath for the state's development, and accused the earlier Samajwadi Party government of lawlessness and of hindering growth. The Samajwadi Party has not responded to the remarks in the reports available so far.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said Mr Shah would inaugurate the meeting and give "fresh energy and guidance" to the party's organisation in the state. State minister Narendra Kumar Kashyap said the visit would raise the enthusiasm of workers and described the goal as forming a BJP government in Uttar Pradesh for the third consecutive time.

Rajya Sabha member Geeta Shakya described the gathering as the first working committee meeting since the party's state unit was reconstituted. BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi said regular meetings, study sessions and training programmes showed that the BJP was an organisation rather than a family-run outfit, calling it "a party with a difference". Party MLAs said workers remained active through the year and looked forward to Mr Shah's guidance as preparations pick up pace.

The Assembly election in India's most populous state is due in 2027, though polling dates have not been announced. In the 2022 election, the BJP won 255 seats, its ally Apna Dal (Sonelal) won 12 and the Nishad Party won six, giving the alliance a comfortable majority in the 403-member House.

The picture has since become more competitive. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the Samajwadi Party and the Congress fought together and performed strongly in the state, and the Samajwadi Party is widely expected to remain the main challenger. The BJP faces the task of holding its support across caste groups and regions.

Mr Shah has played a central role in the party's campaigns in Uttar Pradesh since the 2014 Lok Sabha election and the 2017 Assembly election.

The meeting concludes on Saturday. Details of the strategy agreed there, and any announcements on campaign programmes, were not yet available.
