CHANDIGARH, October 23 (Aalimi Nation) – The Bharatiya Janata Party in Haryana has set itself a three-month deadline to build or rebuild booth-level committees across the state, after the party's new state in-charge, Smriti Irani, held two days of organisational meetings in Panchkula.
It was Irani's first visit to Haryana since she was appointed the party's in-charge for the state last month. She is a BJP national general secretary and a former Union minister. She was accompanied by co-in-charge Bhola Singh, a national secretary of the party.
BJP Haryana booth committees
The meetings began on Thursday at the state headquarters in Panchkula. Irani first met state president Archana Gupta, organisation general secretary Pawan Rana and state general secretaries Gopal Sharma, Satyaprakash Jarawata and Ved Phulla. Separate sessions followed with state office-bearers, district presidents and district in-charges.
According to the party, the first day focused on strengthening booths, ensuring workers' participation and making sure welfare schemes reach eligible beneficiaries. Under the plan, an 11-member committee is to be formed or reconstituted at every booth within three months, and a "panna pramukh", a worker responsible for individual pages of the electoral roll, is to be appointed.
Senior office-bearers will also tour districts and stay overnight to meet workers and review the progress of the organisational work. Gupta said state office-bearers, general secretaries and district in-charges would make regular visits to ensure that the committees and panna pramukh appointments are completed on time.
Speaking to reporters in Panchkula, Gupta said the party wanted every worker to have a defined responsibility. She said party workers should help people who face difficulty in accessing government schemes. "If an eligible person faces difficulty accessing a scheme, party workers should help resolve the issue," she said, according to the party's statement.
Meetings with leaders
The programme also included meetings with leaders who have served three terms as state office-bearers, former heads of party wings, and current and former chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of boards and corporations.
On Thursday evening Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini hosted a dinner at his residence for about 25 party leaders. Those present included Union minister Manohar Lal, Rajya Sabha member Subhash Barala, former minister Ram Bilas Sharma, Pawan Rana, former state president Mohan Lal Badoli and Gupta.
Party spokesperson Sanjay Sharma said meetings at various levels would continue until Friday evening. On Friday, the Chief Minister and his cabinet are to attend one session, followed by meetings with party MLAs and other elected representatives.
The BJP returned to power in Haryana for a third consecutive term in 2024, winning 48 seats in the 90-member Assembly and forming the government. A party spokesperson said Irani would review the 42 seats the party lost in that election, assessing organisational weaknesses and the state of local leadership.
The next steps will be the Friday meetings with the cabinet and legislators, and the progress of the three-month booth exercise, which the party says will be monitored through the district visits.
