New Delhi, September 3: The Delhi High Court has provided relief to Booth Level Agents (BLAs) of political parties in connection with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, observing that they cannot be held responsible for verifying every detail mentioned in voters’ enumeration forms.
The court was hearing a petition filed by Delhi Congress leaders challenging the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) requirement that BLAs give undertakings stating that they had verified all particulars contained in the enumeration forms.
The petitioners argued that political party representatives do not have access to official government records needed to independently verify every piece of information provided by voters.
The court’s observation means that BLA responsibility should be limited to information that they are actually in a position to verify, rather than requiring them to certify details beyond their knowledge or access.
The case relates to the ongoing SIR exercise and the role assigned to political parties’ representatives during the verification of electoral rolls.
