Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, leaders associated with the satirical political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), have been placed under preventive arrest ahead of the second day of planned protests in the national capital, according to a report by NDTV.
The three were detained on Saturday after arriving in Delhi by flight, sources told NDTV. They were reportedly taken from the aircraft after it landed and had remained in detention since Saturday morning.
According to the report, the three were expected to be taken before an executive magistrate at Delhi Cantonment on Sunday.
CJP Plans to Continue Protest
Despite the arrests, CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde said the group would continue its planned demonstration on Sunday, with supporters preparing to march towards Jantar Mantar.
The protests are directed against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and concern alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), an exercise undertaken to revise electoral rolls.
The protesters are demanding the CEC’s resignation over their allegations. The allegations remain claims made by the protesters and should not be treated as established findings.
Protests Enter Second Day
The preventive arrests came as the planned agitation entered its second day. The CJP, which originated as an online satirical political campaign, has mobilised supporters around its demands concerning the electoral-roll revision process.
The latest developments are likely to keep attention focused on the protest, the authorities’ handling of the demonstrators and the issues raised over the electoral-roll revision exercise.
