At least 17 people, including five police personnel, have been killed and 73 others injured following an explosion at a mosque inside the Old Police Lines in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to Pakistani officials cited by BBC Urdu.
The explosion occurred at around 1:15 p.m. local time as Friday prayers were underway, according to Rescue 1122 officials.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed said preliminary information indicated that a vehicle loaded with explosives was driven into the area adjacent to the Old Police Lines. Gunfire was also reported following the explosion.
Officials said the attackers appeared to have targeted the police lines and the mosque.
According to police officials, seven armed attackers subsequently entered the police lines, prompting an exchange of fire with police and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD).
Authorities said that, so far, six attackers, including a suicide bomber and a sniper, have been killed. A clearance operation was reportedly in its final stages.
District Headquarters Hospital Kohat Medical Superintendent Dr Tahir Ali Shah said 73 people had been injured, with 15 in critical condition.
The incident occurred during Friday prayers, raising concerns about the safety of worshippers and security personnel at the police facility.
Authorities have not yet publicly provided further details about the identity of those behind the attack or claimed responsibility.
