UN Refugee Agency Warns of Growing Internal Displacement and Calls for Humanitarian Assistance

The number of people displaced inside Yemen could rise from around 130,000 to approximately 230,000 in the coming months as fighting between government forces and the Houthi movement resumes, the United Nations refugee agency has warned.

Speaking at a press conference in Geneva, Babar Baloch, a spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said the renewed violence could trigger a significant increase in internal displacement across the country.

The UN agency also estimates that the number of people travelling by sea across the Red Sea towards Djibouti could increase from around 3,000 to 10,000 during the same period.

Baloch stressed the urgent need to ensure humanitarian assistance reaches displaced people and refugees affected by the renewed conflict.

Yemen has faced years of conflict and humanitarian instability, leaving millions of people dependent on humanitarian assistance. Any further escalation could place additional pressure on already vulnerable communities and humanitarian operations.

The UN refugee agency has called for continued access to affected populations and adequate humanitarian support as displacement pressures increase.
