DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan: At least six police officers were injured after suspected militants opened fire on a police convoy in Pakistan’s northwestern district of Dera Ismail Khan on Saturday, according to police officials.
The attack took place near Amin Farms in the Hathala area of the district, where armed assailants reportedly targeted a police vehicle carrying senior officers.
According to the office of the Inspector General of Police, the convoy came under sudden gunfire, prompting security personnel to return fire. The attackers subsequently fled the area.
Officials said the vehicle carrying the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Kulachi and the Station House Officer (SHO) of Hathala was among those targeted.
Senior Officers Among the Injured
A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the injured officers as DSP Kulachi Kifayat Khan, Assistant Sub-Inspector Nauman Khan, constables Ghulam Qasim, Ghulam Saeed and Hashim, along with a female police constable.
The injured personnel were provided medical assistance, while security forces launched a search operation in the surrounding area to trace those responsible for the attack.
No group had claimed responsibility for the incident at the time of reporting.
Governor Condemns Attack
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi strongly condemned the attack and praised the police for their immediate response.
His office said the governor had directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured officers and expressed hope for their speedy recovery.
Continuing Security Challenges
Dera Ismail Khan, located in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has witnessed repeated security incidents in recent years, reflecting continuing challenges posed by militant violence in parts of northwestern Pakistan.
The latest attack once again highlights the risks faced by police personnel operating in areas affected by persistent security threats.
Authorities have not released further details about the identity or possible motives of the attackers, and investigations remain underway.
