TAIZ, Yemen — September 19, 2026: Yemeni government forces have recaptured several positions from Houthi fighters in the Al-Wazi'iyah district west of Taiz following clashes, according to the Taiz military media centre.
The forces reportedly regained control of positions around Jabal Al-Shuhada, overlooking Wadi Al-Ghail, after pushing Houthi fighters back during fighting in the area.
Government forces also said they had repelled a Houthi attack on the Al-Kadaha front in the Al-Ma'afer district, west of Taiz. According to the military media centre, the fighting resulted in casualties among Houthi ranks and forced some fighters to withdraw.
Separately, warplanes carried out airstrikes on reported Houthi positions and facilities near Joulat Al-Qasr, close to the eastern entrance of Taiz, according to the same source.
UN Warns of Rapidly Rising Displacement
The escalation comes amid a sharp increase in displacement across Yemen.
According to the United Nations, displacement has accelerated since September 3, with more than 100,000 people reportedly displaced during September so far. Most of those displaced have reportedly moved toward Taiz and Lahj governorates.
UNICEF has separately reported that more than 57,000 children were displaced in just two weeks as a result of the continuing conflict, leaving many without access to essential services.
The agency warned that the renewed escalation could further deepen the humanitarian crisis affecting an estimated 12.2 million children who require humanitarian assistance in Yemen.
The latest developments underline the continuing security and humanitarian challenges facing Yemen, where renewed fighting is forcing thousands of families to leave their homes while humanitarian organisations struggle to provide essential assistance.
