Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has said Israeli policies pose a growing threat not only to the two-state solution but also to the existence and safety of the Palestinian people.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly through a pre-recorded video message, Abbas criticized Israel’s policies in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, saying Palestinians face increasing pressure in their homes and on their land.
Abbas also criticized the United States for denying him a visa to attend the UN General Assembly as the Palestinian Authority’s representative, calling the decision a form of punishment.
He warned that Israeli settlement expansion could further divide the West Bank and separate Palestinian communities from East Jerusalem. He specifically pointed to the E1 settlement project, which has drawn criticism from several Western governments.
Abbas called on the UN Security Council to take what he described as responsible action to protect Palestinian territory and prevent further displacement.
The Palestinian president also addressed concerns over upcoming elections. He said parliamentary elections are scheduled for November 28, followed by presidential elections.
His comments came amid international concerns that the security situation and logistical challenges in the Palestinian territories could affect the election timetable. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has called for the elections to be held as scheduled.
Abbas reiterated that the Palestinian leadership remains committed to holding the elections on time.
