TEHRAN/DOHA: Iran has urged Qatar to transfer detained Iranian pilots to a hospital on land, saying the men are being held aboard a vessel and are in poor physical condition, according to Iranian state-linked media cited by Reuters.

Mohammad Bagherzadeh, commander of the Committee for the Search of Missing Persons of Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff, called on Qatar to arrange appropriate medical treatment for the pilots.

He also urged the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to send an air ambulance to Qatar to help facilitate the return of injured or sick detainees to Iran.

Qatar Disputes Iran's Account

Qatar has denied holding Iranian pilots in the circumstances described by Tehran.

Doha has said the individuals had violated Qatari airspace earlier this year and failed to respond to attempts by Qatari authorities to contact them.

Qatar has also said it contacted Iran regarding the handover of the remains of one pilot and invited Tehran to review details of its search-and-rescue operations.

According to the Qatari position, however, Iran did not respond to the invitation.

Iran Calls for Investigation

Bagherzadeh welcomed Qatar's reported decision to receive a team of Iranian experts and called on Doha to provide the delegation with the necessary cooperation.

Iran has previously said that an Air Force expert and a fact-finding team have been waiting for months to enter Qatar to investigate the circumstances surrounding the pilots.

Tehran has accused Qatari authorities of repeatedly delaying the process.

Qatar has maintained that its invitation for an Iranian delegation to discuss the matter remains open.

Why the Dispute Matters

The disagreement comes at a sensitive time for relations between Iran and Qatar, two important regional actors with significant security and diplomatic interests.

The dispute involves not only the status and health of the Iranian personnel but also competing accounts over airspace violations, search-and-rescue operations and the handling of the remains of at least one pilot.

The involvement of the ICRC could provide an additional humanitarian channel if both sides agree to its participation.

For now, however, the two governments continue to differ over what happened and how the detained or missing personnel should be handled.
