The United States has withdrawn all of its B-1 bomber aircraft from Royal Air Force Fairford in the United Kingdom amid security concerns over an alleged terrorist plot targeting the base, according to US officials.
The RAF Fairford base, located northwest of London, had been hosting 12 B-1 bombers. The aircraft have previously been used in US air operations against Iran.
Pentagon Confirms Bombers Have Returned to US
The Pentagon said operational security requirements prevented it from immediately confirming the movement of US military personnel and assets. However, it later confirmed that all US bombers deployed at RAF Fairford had returned to their main bases in the United States.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the Pentagon said the B-1 bombers remain capable of conducting long-range strikes from US territory.
Britain's Ministry of Defence declined to comment on the decision.
Alleged Iran-Linked Plot
The Wall Street Journal reported that US officials had been alerted to an alleged Iran-linked plan to target American bombers and military personnel stationed at the base.
According to a senior US official cited in the report, a branch of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps allegedly recruited British nationals to carry out the plot. The alleged plan reportedly involved several stages, including an operation near the base intended to create a diversion before the planned attack.
Six Suspects Arrested
The US decision follows the arrest of six suspects allegedly linked to a possible attack on the base.
A US official and a British official said the suspected attack was disrupted the previous Sunday. British authorities subsequently released all the suspects on bail while investigations continued.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there was “strong evidence” of Iranian involvement in the incident.
US President Donald Trump said those allegedly involved in the plot had been planning to cause “massive damage”, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio also indicated that a foreign actor may have been involved.
Iran has rejected the allegations as baseless and summoned Britain's ambassador in Tehran over the matter.
The reported withdrawal of the B-1 bombers comes amid heightened security concerns and follows growing scrutiny of potential threats against US military assets in Europe.
The allegations regarding Iranian involvement have not been independently established, and investigations by British authorities remain ongoing.
